The Dryden Regional Health Centre is seeking to fill the following position with a highly motivated, team-orientated professional:

Permanent Part-Time Registered Practical Nurse, Pharmacy


This position is a key member of the pharmacy team and fulfils several roles, including a clerical and cleaning component. This RPN position is accountable for managing the day-to-day activities within the pharmacy, while providing quality pharmacy services in the most fiscally responsible manner in accordance with required standards of practice and legislation, while maintaining requirements of the NAPRA, OCP, and Accreditation Canada.

Responsibilities:

  1. Dispensing Drugs:
    • Daily processing of drugs orders which entails receiving a written drug prescription, interpreting the order and adjusting the order according to policy
    • Distribution of drugs to medication dispensing cabinets
    • Maintains medication dispensing cabinets (ADU)
    • Removal of expired drugs from all medication cabinets in the hospital and restocks accordingly
    • Receiving and dispensing of narcotic and controlled drugs
    • Active participation in the maintenance of the formulary
  2. Compounding of Drug Preparations:
  • Preparing of antineoplastic drugs, limited IV admixtures, TPN solutions (basic), some oral/topical solutions, and simple topical formulations, according procedures
  • Calculation of dosages for the above as required
  • Maintenance of records and log books for some of the above compounding to be used for audit and recall purposed
  • Maintaining NAPRA standards
  • Follow the policies and procedures to maintain safety of the staff and product being compounded
  • Communication with the pharmacist for directions and clarifications
  1. Clerical Duties:
  • Maintenance of concise records for all narcotic and controlled drug transactions
  • Responsible for procurement of drugs as needed
  • Carry out procedure for drug recalls as per Health Canada and manufacturer's notices
  • Assist in the retrieval of drug information for medical and/or nursing staff
  • Completion of the cleaning logs, temperature logs as per NAPRA standards
  • Maintains appropriate records on prescriptions filled
  1. General Duties:
  • Maintenance of a safe and clean environment for the dispensing and compounding of drugs
  • Maintenance of security within the department
  • Distribution of drugs to local retail pharmacies and other hospitals ,on request from a pharmacist or designate
  • Maintain policies/procedures, processes and programs within the Pharmacy service such that patient safety with regards to medications is ensured
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Current Certificate of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Current Pharmacy experience an asset
  • Chemotherapy preparation experience and training required
  • Experience in Pharmacy ordering and inventory maintenance an asset
  • Attention to detail
  • Demonstration of strong nursing practice, skill and judgment
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal skills including superior verbal communication abilities
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, leadership and mentoring skills
  • Proven attendance record
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the job
