he Dryden Regional Health Centre is seeking to fill the following permanent full time position with a highly motivated, team-orientated professional:

Bimaadiziwin Support Worker

Reporting to the Director- Mental Health Services the Bimaadiziwin Support Worker bridges the gap between traditional healing and western medicine, with a strong mental health foundation. Bimaadiziwin - "seeking the good life" will include working with Anishinabe clients while they are in both a community and hospital setting, pursuing improved mental and physical health outcomes. This position will act as a liaison with the medical community, as well as a patient navigator, supporting the patients and families utilizing the Dryden Regional Health Centre and community resources.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide psychosocial, social and navigational support to First Nations patients and caregivers through assessments, counselling, referrals to other support agencies/services, and completion of appropriate government forms as required
  • Advocacy support for First Nations people accessing care at DRHC
  • Provide mental health counselling and outreach for assigned clients from the Mental Health Department with a primary focus on the Anishinabe client base
  • Provide case management as needed including linkages into the community locally, regionally and provincially such as the rent supplement program. Assist in navigating service delivery networks to find required resources
  • Act as a member of the inter-disciplinary team to ensure the most effective treatment plan
  • Participate in inpatient discharge planning when requested for First Nations patients
  • Health promotion and prevention education
  • Development, management and delivery of programs
  • Co-ordinate referrals for ER patients, inpatients and outpatients to be treated by healers and others familiar with traditional healing as requested
  • Assist and educate health care professionals in their understanding of First Nations cultural norms, traditions and values. Participate in, in conjunction with hospital, regular cultural awareness education sessions
  • Assist individuals and/or communities in organizing healing ceremonies if required
  • Provide or arrange interpretation services for First Nations patients
  • Assist hospitalized patients who have no family/support in the community
  • Assist clients with adjustment to the disease of any chronic illness
  • Maintain statistics, annual reports, operating plans for assigned role
  • Other duties as deemed appropriate by supervisor

 

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess the following key competencies, record of experience and academic preparation:

  • Post secondary education in the social sciences in Indigenous Studies: social worker or nursing
  • Ability to speak and understand traditional language
  • Previous experience or training in traditional/cultural healing services
  • Experience working in a healthcare environment is considered an asset
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Good time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Demonstrates behaviours consistent with Dryden Regional Health Centre's Code of Conduct and Standards of Behaviour
  • Demonstrates DRHC Core Values; Accountability, Integrity, Humility, Compassion and Respect
  • Proof of full Covid-19 vaccination status to be presented prior to hire
